Coronavirus (COVID-19) has gripped the world. As this is being written 192 countries have reported cases totaling over 1/3 million people. In the UK alone 281 people have lost their lives and we here are not nearly the hardest hit country. Yet because of the exponential nature of the disease, these numbers will likely be out of date by the time you read this. Meanwhile, the two Phase I clinical trial vaccine candidates will take another 12 to 18 months to be proven safe and scaled up.
In light of this, governments around the world have put their economies on hold in order to curb the loss of lives. The strategy is to encourage, and eventually enforce, social isolation. In times like this, people’s focus naturally turns to the essentials and grocers are stepping up to meet them.
